We will be meeting at the Grassy Ridge Mine Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Wildflower Walk at The Vertical Bog
Wildflower Walk at The Vertical Bog
May 17, 2024 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
We will be visiting the Vertical Bog on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This incredible spot is the shortest and easiest walk of my whole series, and one loaded with the most amazing collection of rare and special Plants and Wildflowers.
One of the most special and iconic spots on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Vertical Bog is roadside seepage area unlike any other, filled with special, rare and endemic plants that exist right along the parkway across from an overlook. Carnivorous Sundews, Grass-of-Parnassus, Sticky Tofieldia, and five different species of st John's wort can all be seen at this short and easy walk.
All of the Friday Wildflower Walks are offered on a sliding scale of $15-$50 per person, and are capped at 15 people per session. This allows for more people to be able to attend the walks. Wildflower Walk to Old Bald on the Blue ridge Parkway
Wildflower Walk to Old Bald on the Blue ridge Parkway
May 31, 2024 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
We will be meeting on the Blue Ridge Parkway to walk out to Old Bald, one of a series of High Elevation Mountain Balds that can be found in this area. Along the way we will be walking along a ridgeline through Old Growth, yet stunted Oak Trees, and will see some beautiful Wildflowers.
Here is a link to a writeup with good directions to the trailhead, which says "The trailhead for this stretch of the Mountains to Sea sits in a blind hairpin curve at mile 434.2 on the Parkway. It isn’t a formal overlook, merely a grassy area beside the roadway with just enough room for a few cars. Be careful when you pull over because of the blind curve. Traffic could be coming the other way. You will know you have the right spot if you see an iron t-bar about 30 feet up the trail." https://internetbrothers.org/2016/07/11/mountains-to-sea-trail-near-old-bald-nantahala-national-forest/ And, here is a link to a google map pin for our meeting spot. https://goo.gl/maps/o7dbrXjAnKUr5xhw5
I will be standing along the roadway at the trailhead, and will be very visible. Please let me know if you have any questions about where to meet.
